Day 39 – Okay, Bring on the Tests.

So apparently as I was writing about how crappy my day was yesterday the universe had a little lesson in store for me. It’s going get worse before it gets better.

I woke up this morning to the cloudy wet storm I left at the North Rim of the Grand Canyon yesterday. Then, as I went to start the truck and turn the wipers on I was greeted with a repetitive array of deafening clicks. Yes, my truck was dead. Luckily I had backed into the spot I was occupying in the Walmart parking lot as a gent soon offered a jump start. I had my cheap cables out which I soon found out are not thick enough to actually work. He dug his out of the back of his truck and I was soon running. I blindly went looking for a repair shop to look at the battery issue and repair my tires.

At the Hurst Bridgestone repair shop in Flagstaff I soon had another new (used) tire on my truck to replace the unrepairable flat I got yesterday and another repair done on the slow leaking rear tire. They did a (thankfully free) assessment of the electrical system and determined that my battery had in fact, given up the ghost.

After talking battery prices with them and paying my tire bill I ventured on to find a cheaper alternative for the battery. I stopped at Autozone (leaving a running but locked truck in the parking lot) to look at their prices but soon found myself back at Walmart. My $77 dollar battery after eco fees etc was $99. I did however get $15 back after I swapped the batteries myself in the Walmart parking lot and took the dead one back into customer service, something about a refunded core charge.

So after today’s unforeseen expenses I won’t tell you what I have left. The couple of weeks I thought I had left in my budget has been reduced significantly. Let’s just say that I sent my resume off to a friend who works in the Alberta oil sands about a job as a general laborer. This trip may be taking a detour/hiatus while I go make some honest money and reassess things. I drove and lived out of my truck shooting all last winter, there’s no reason I can’t work in it.

My heart wants to stay out here but my mind is in a different state of reality. The only real challenge so far has been the money and despite my efforts to land some remote web work and sell prints, refueling the bank account has become a priority. Like a friend told me, if the budget was there, days like today would be a non-issue and it’s true. If after a 6-8 contract working in Northern Alberta I still want to continue on this journey I’ll be better prepared financially to do so. I guess I’ll wait to see what the universe thinks, if I don’t get the oil sands job then things will most definitely get interesting.

With that said I’ll be hanging around Flagstaff for the next couple of days as there’s a good library here. Once I hear from the bank in Winslow regarding my bank card I’ll head there to pick it up. After that the future is totally unknown.

I wasn’t naive enough to think that this scenario wasn’t possible. It’s here and I’m dealing with it. Thankful for what I do have and the friends I have that care about me. I’m trying to laugh it all off now just as I imagine I will when looking back on it later. In the big picture, minor inconveniences and a test of my patience sure, but overall I just have to weather the storm and continue on, one way or another.

Thank you all for your comments and support. Every word means a lot to me and helps me keep going.
Your appreciative vagabond,

Day 34 – Editing in Prescott, AZ.

I spent most of the day in the library today. Editing some more shots and applying for some web work. It seems like I didn’t get much done for the time I spent in there but oh well. I was a rainy day off and on here in Prescott so I didn’t miss too much.

I’m in the Walmart parking lot again. This time I’m somehow picking up wi-fi from the nearby Subway.

I’m not sure why or what triggered it but as I was leaving the library tonight I started to feel a little homesick. Missing my friends and certain aspects/routines of the life I left behind. The idea that even when this trip is over (whether that day is tomorrow or in a couple of years), I’m essentially still starting completely over came up and slapped me in the face today. One side of that is that it makes me want to keep going as I have nothing to lose. The other side is the fact that I have “nothing” to lose. Does that make sense? I guess it’s an internal conflict that I have to work at suppressing. I want this, it’s just hard convincing myself of it some days.

On that note I find comfort in the fact that I can slip into my sleeping bag and be warm on this rainy night. I’m thankful for that and also the fact that tomorrow I’ll be feeling back to normal about things.

Day 33 – Whitmann and Prescott Arizona

I left Phoenix and started on my way North out of Phoenix. I wasn’t sure which direction to head and part of me wanted to go further South but I was apprehensive after looking at the current budget. So I flipped the coin to see.

I got as far as Whitmann. Soon I was talking to Reed who runs his wrecking yard there. A sprawling sea of junked cars, trucks, boats etc. I asked if it was alright to shoot some photos and he said that I have to pay the admission fee. It’s usually a 12 pack of soda but because I was new he’d settle for a 6 pack. Because he apparently gets a lot of requests for photo access his rates are set at a 12 pack of soda per photographer and/or model. He doesn’t like diet soda and doesn’t want beer. After going to the nearby store and purchasing a 3 dollar six pack of Coke I wandered around in the afternoon sun and got a few shots. A lot of his junk is newer so not all that interesting to me but I did manage a few shots of the old carcasses he has of some pre 80′s gems.

After that I just drove along the 89 highway away through the winding mountain roads into Prescott. What a nice little town nestled here in the hills. Current home to The Captain and Tennille I saw on the city website. I found the library and worked on a few shots while listening to the Vancouver Canucks fail miserably in Minnesota. Then I found the Walmart for a cool nights sleep.

Day 32 – Laptop Blues

It seems I overlooked a certain aspect of doing a road trip that one is trying to promote while doing it. The attempt at less time on a computer has fallen by the wayside due to the fact that I want to share my photo work, daily thoughts and video with the world. These avenues of communication, albeit kind of fun do take up a fair chunk of time. I sat in Starbucks today from noon-ish until they closed at 9pm editing, rendering and uploading the second video installment. I’m not complaining as I don’t spend much money on days like these. No gas, no cold drinks, minimal food. Three dollars on my Starbucks card gets me a coffee and a refill and a place to work all day.

I got a late start today though as I had to get another tired fixed. Seems I picked up a small nail sometime over the last few days and had another slow leak. Walmart in Phoenix took their time getting the repair done but the fellow was being thorough so I can’t fault him. Plus I think they were a little understaffed today.

I got a lot done and am ready to leave here tomorrow and see some more open road. I’m anxious to feel my camera in my hands again and it’s only been a few days.

My truck payment and insurance have left my bank account leaving my budget looking kind of scary. I’m down to the nitty gritty now and am actively looking for and bidding on website work. This is also proving to be harder that I thought as just like when I was home in Vancouver, I’m getting no responses. A couple more weeks and it might be tough decision time. I’m holding out that things will turn around and I’ll be able to keep going. Like I said before failure isn’t an option.

So keeping with my optimism I’m going to take a little stroll into Walmart and treat myself to a small container of ice cream. It’s been awhile since I had some. Funny I almost always had some in the fridge at home, now it’s been weeks since I even thought of it.

As I sit and relax, enjoying some tasty ice cream and this perfect breeze I’ll be thinking of my friends back home and my next few weeks out here. Cheers.

Day 31 – Starbucks Might Start Charging Me Rent

I’ve been in Phoenix but hard to say that statement as all I’ve really seen was a Starbucks, the library and another Starbucks since Friday. I’ve been working on getting caught up on my edits and still have a way to go. Sorting through and working on the best shots takes time when you take too many to begin with.

Stormfront

I also imported the clips into a new project for the next WOTR video blog which hopefully will be out sometime this coming week. Since I’m showered now I might stay for another day and get some more done. Then perhaps head somewhere a little more remote after here. I really have no ability to check out the cool things in most cities as I don’t have extra cash for admission fees, parking etc. If I had more time I should be emailing attractions for freebies and discounts in lieu of a write up but I’m having enough trouble keeping up with the shots I’m taking. Anyone want to be my manager/agent/sales rep/public relations person?

Anyway, another night hanging in a Walmart parking lot. I found some wi-fi so may do some research on where to go next or may just try and relax for a couple of hours and watch a movie.

All is well in Phoenix, AZ.
