Day 118 – Getting Closer to Home

I was late getting out of Calgary as I was working on some edits because I hadn’t done many in a while. In addition it was grey and gloomy in the city. Once I hit the road I traveled South down the 22. It felt good to be back on the road, especially knowing that I’m closing in on home. I love this form of travel, I could do a lot more of this. Right now though I’m getting excited to get home and reconnect with my friends and family and experience some of the Olympic energy in the city I call home. I’m sure by summer I’ll be jones-ing for another trip though.

As I drove today I was watching the sun fall behind the Rockies with just a hint of open space between the clouds and the mountains. I saw a few old cars but they all seemed to be on private land on working homesteads at the end of long driveways so I simply moved forward. No matter what happens at this point my creative well is full. More shots would be awesome but if the weather simply isn’t there or the opportunities don’t present themselves I’ll just keep heading West.

There’s a lot in BC that I still want to see, but since I live here, some weekend trips will definitely be taken later on this year.

In Sparwood BC tonight. It’s trying to rain. Funny, I can’t remember the last time it rained on me, kind of missed it.

Days 115, 116, 117 – Some Downtime in Calgary

I’ve spent a few days here in Calgary catching up with some friends as I once lived here. For seven years “Cowtown” was home while I played music and experienced a different city.

I’m all set to get on my way tomorrow and am looking forward to my last leg of this awesome trip that has taken me completely across this country we live in. However, my friends back in Vancouver are demanding that I get back to town and experience some of the Olympic energy. Despite how I feel about the politics, commercialism and corporate involvement in the games I also feel like it’s a once in a lifetime experience as well. So as I leave here tomorrow I’m going to be watching the weather carefully and if I feel like I’d rather wait to take some shots I may find I may just keep driving through. It’s not like I’m far from home and smaller road trips to my home province are always fun.

So with that said, I do feel a bit sad that the trip is coming to a close. That however, doesn’t meant that I will stop posting here, as a matter of fact, once I’m home and as time allows the photo section of this become quite extensive as I have more time to edit some of the thousands of shots I’ve taken.

Anyway, I’m sure we’ll see each other again soon. Until tomorrow.

Day 112 – If Every Day Was This Good

So the last few days have all started off a little gloomy. Grey, some snow, perhaps a bit drab. But as I get going things start to lift. I’ve been traveling some distance each day mainly because the shots and the weather seem to be co-inspiring and coming together for the afternoons. So much so that when the sun is going down I’m still seeing stuff to shoot.

As I crossed into Alberta today and slipped into Cold Lake for a coffee I hadn’t taken a single shot and it was well, grey and flat. As I started heading South (still using my coin flip navigation) I was soon stopped and out of the truck. For most of the afternoon I’m guessing I traveled 10 miles between the 3 photo stops I made. One abandoned homestead I was at for at least 2 hours as it had so much to shoot. Red barns, shacks, machinery, and old Kenworth, old cars, icicles, and all covered in a nice coating of fresh snow.

After that there was a couple shorter stops and then the sun set and was gone. I drove a little in the dusk and came into Vermillion where I’ll be for the night. If every day was this good, I’d be a very happy man.

Day 111 – Photographic Gold

I think last night was the hardest night in the truck. Just a little colder than I would have liked but you know what they say about things that don’t kill us. I got going, zigging and zaggin across the mid section of Saskatchewan. The more shots I’ve been getting of snow covered cars and trucks, abandoned homes and open fields the more picky I’m getting. Mainly because I’m getting to know the difference between the good and the “golden”. Obviously I just love to shoot so some of my shooting depends on light, distance, what’s in the background and lately, just a little, how much snow I have to trudge through.

On that note I did a lot of driving today. It was a coin toss day as I didn’t know which way to go half the time so I let the universe guide me and boy did she come through. Even though there was some distance between them, the shooting possibilities were awesome today. Including two yards full of old cars and trucks. One with pristine snow drifts to add some angles.

I have to apologize for the lac of new additions to the photos. I’m simply just having too much fun shooting. Financially I have to slow down a little so there may be a day in a library in my near future so I’ll get some edits done and some shots up then.

Ending today in Meadow Lake Saskatchewan, may slip into Alberta tomorrow and work my way across and down. I have a bunch of people in Calgary I’m going to try to touch base with so may be there a few days. I nice break before my last leg home.

Day 106 – Manitoba Sunsets

As it has been for the last few days I woke up to another great day, sun shining bright in the morning. But unlike the previous few days the afternoon didn’t cloud over and start snowing. Today I was blessed with an awesome sunset while overlooking the frozen plain that is Lake Winnipeg.

I drove from Dryden, a little tour of Kenora and then across into Manitoba. I got a few shots of some pristine lakes before Manitoba but not a whole lot for shots today. Found an old homestead with a tractor out in the snow and some other random shots but the sunset made the day. I’m in Selkirk tonight, listening to the Canucks game on my laptop while hanging out at the library.

In the early weeks of this trip if I had a slow day for photos I somehow felt frustrated because I am putting so much on the line for this trip that I felt that every day should be pure gold and if it wasn’t it was somehow my fault. As I’ve gone over miles and miles of this country I’ve realized that not every mile will offer shots. I used to think that perhaps “I should have went the other way, or down that other road” if my choice of direction didn’t produce something. I’ve come to simply enjoy the moment, sure I’m constantly looking for the next shot but if nothing comes I’m okay with it. It just means that tomorrow, or the next day I’ll get a shot worth 3 days. The fact of the matter is that no matter what I end up getting, I wouldn’t have gotten anything with out the driving.

I’ve become found of “flipping a coin” when faced with indecision about which direction to go, simply trusting in the universe. Some detours are simply a feeling, some are helped by the coin toss. It’s the combination of the two that have been bringing some awesome experiences, shots or not.

I had my first “vehicular close call” today. I was on a gravel back road, covered in inches of snow. I was scooting along and realized I was about to miss my turn back to the main road and as I turned “Betty decided she didn’t want to turn so sharp. I slid across the road at an angle and hit the snowbank pretty hard. With a couple times rocking back and forth I was easily out of the snowbank. I didn’t hit anything hard enough for any serious damage but did acquire a couple of paint scratches from the hard ice/gravel that was plowed up to form the bank. Just enough of a reminder to slow down a bit. My truck is going to need some TLC when I get home anyway, a good cleaning and a polish. I look at it as simply a scratch on a tool, since that’s the state of mind I was in when I chose this truck anyway.

So, into Winnipeg tomorrow, a visit with my friend Madeleine and then we’ll see. Perhaps another coin toss will be in order.

Day 83 – Bittersweet is the Turnaround

I’m not sure what I was expecting. Not sure what I thought I would feel or even what I wanted out of it but the fact that I made it this far and now essentially have to turn around has left me feeling a little off. Honestly I was feeling a little blue the last few days anyway but figured I’d get over it once I hit the East of the East.

It’s not like the adventure is over, I still have to make it home and have no set agenda as per the way here. Basically it comes down to making the money last.

As I was leaving to come on this trip a friend gave me a book written by Stuart Wilde. I’d never read any of his stuff but have read other books regarding spirituality, energy, positivity and “the universe” etc before. I just opened this book and am halfway through it tonight. Good timing too as it made a lot of sense and I feel much better about a lot of things, including the rest of this trip and my goals upon my return to “regular” everyday life. What makes me smile is the fact that since I have everything to do with it, my regular everyday life is going to get pretty sweet in the next couple of years. I don’t have much to complain about and a lot to be thankful for so really it’s not a long journey. I simply have to keep my “ego” in check and lose the fear, the fear of actually doing what I’m doing now so I can keep doing it. Yes, you heard it here first, this trip wasn’t exactly “easy” for me to just get up and do. It still isn’t.

For now though I am back in the right headspace. Tomorrow will be another great day for photos as I explore Bonavista Newfoundland Then I will again be slowly on my way closer to people that mean the world to me. Until I get there, I will be lost in my element, appreciating what is absorbed through these orbs in my skull.

Day 79 – Awesome First Day in Newfoundland

I started my Newfoundland segment of my trip at Port-aux Basque this morning with a Tim Hortons. Made my way up the number one but didn’t get very far before I was in Cape Ray for a good couple of hours snapping shots. What a cool little area for older, cottages and abandoned buildings and a few other things. I initially went there for the lighthouse but once I saw all the treasures to shoot I was there awhile. I have shots of a huge whale bone that was perched on a rock, along with a rusty anchor next to a rotting shell of an old boat.

After that I continued on through Tompkins, St Andrew, Searston, Codroy and to the lighthouse at Cape Anguille. Back onto the Trans Canada Highway, efficiently called the TCH here. A slight detour through Jeffery’s, Mckay’s and Cartyville and Heatheron but didn’t find a lot to shoot, partially due to the snowstorm I found myself in. I took the exit through St. Georges and into Stephenville for dinner just as darkness settled in.

I’ve noticed that the distances between populated areas are pretty hefty. Something I wasn’t ready for. I’ll be conserving gas and gas money as much as possible because there’s going to be a lot of road between shots over here.

Anyway, a good first day in Newfoundland. …and I’ve been leaving my cards around so hopefully some new visitors here soon too. :)

Day 74 – Still Snowing but lots of Shots

I slept incredibly well last night in Tatamagouche. The wind was rocking the truck, gusting and howling but I still had an awesome sleep in my parking lot of the closed Foodland. The weather was pretty much the same this morning, snowing again but less wind. Got a great start at 8am and right from the start was coming across cool subject matter for some shots. Some would have been better with some nicer weather but overall I got some keepers. I found an old TV still intact in an abandoned farmhouse and got some creepy but intriguing shots of it. My favorite find of the day.

I stopped at a small lighthouse in Arisaig. Took many shots of the huge waves slamming the rocks in the wind. I’m surprised at how well the truck handles the snow, very impressed.

Anyway. I’m here in Antigonish (apparently they don’t like gonishes here), haha. I’m going to pull up a nice spot in the Walmart lot and hopefully have another good sleep. Should be well into Cape Breton by this time tomorrow.

Cheers all and Happy New Year!!
