Day 102 – A New Beggining, A New Attitude

Today I woke to more snow, a gray windy day. I gathered my bearings and started on my way. The broken hard drive securely boxed up for the ride home, a new one ready to hold what the remaining trip holds. I left Parry Sound and drove for awhile, the gray started to break in between snow flurries along the way. I was on the 69 Highway until I needed a change of scenery. I started flipping a coin for directional advice. I’ve done this many times on this trip, leaving my day up the toss of a coin. All my options open except for backtracking.

As I started to explore the side roads around the shores of Georgian Bay photographic opportunities started to unveil themselves to me once again. I shot old Pilings sticking out of the ice in Byng Inlet, (where I also fell on my ass on the ice). I shot an old camperized school bus I found on a construction road, I shot an abandoned Truck Stop on the 69, I shot an old yellow work truck that I had seen on my way through in November. I tossed the coin a few more times during the day, found myself driving on a road that was only being used by snowmobiles this time of year which lead me to the ice covered Cutter lake. After that I found an old house as the sun started descending and then an awesome sunset from a bridge just outside of Massey Ontario.

Tonight I rest outside of Massey in Walford, my heart full and my mind at ease. Over 6 gigs of photos taken today. I am back.

Day 101 – Moving on From Bad News

I spent the most of the morning finding and going to some computer shops in Barrie. Gathering opinions on what my options are with my broken hard drive. The consensus seems to be that the files may be recoverable but that it’s like going to cost a good chunk of change. It seems the arm that holds the heads the read and write to the platter (disc) is damaged from the drop. The disc itself may or may not be damaged but either way it’s got to be taken apart to be determined. So I’ve decided to wait until I get back to Vancouver where I’ll find a data recovery specialist to see what they can do. Besides, by the sounds of it I’ll have to save up some money to cover the costs anyway.

My hardest job today was to find peace with the uncertainty of the status of my first 95 days worth or travel, work and photos. I am trying to remain positive that it will all work out while I continue on.

I drove through the sunny day today looking for new shots. But as some days have an abundance of shots but no good light, today was the opposite. I simply didn’t really see much that inspired me to stop at least until I rolled into Parry Sound. As I pulled in the sun was setting, I found a shoreline and saw some good shots. The brilliant day was not a complete loss.

Another thing I want to mention is that some of my financial stress that was starting to build up has taken a turn. Between friends and family I now have the assurance that I can make my way home and still have the freedom to wander a bit. My heart is full and my remaining days will be full of opportunities. I can feel this.

Day 100 – Weather Network Interview, then a Crash!

No I didn’t crash my truck.

I drove to Oakville and met with David and Suzanne at the Weather Network this afternoon after leaving my friend’s place in downtown Toronto. They showed me around and despite David’s busy day were very gracious hosts. Suzanne made it very easy and comfortable to share with her on camera some details about my trip. It was a fun afternoon and from what I hear the full interview has aired a few times today as my friends back home have seen it. I’m hoping to perhaps get a link to the segment that I can post here. I’ll keep you posted.

I arrived in Barrie Ontario and saw a Starbucks. With hopes of doing some more editing and posting some more shots I set up my laptop and plugged in my external hard drive. All of a sudden it fell off the wide window ledge and hit the floor. It was only about a 12 inch drop but it was enough to trash the read/write heads in the drive. I did some reading online and based on the clicking sounds in the drive this seems to be the problem. I’m hoping that I can get the images recovered. Yes, I’m a little stressed but keeping faith. I also have to figure out where to store the new shots I’ll take on the way home and the recovered shots once I take the drive in.

One step at a time I guess.

So it was a fun and fruitful day with a bitter end but life goes on.

Thanks to Everyone at the Weather Network for their time and hospitality. Cheers

Days 98, 99 – Chilling In Toronto

Yesterday I spent some time in the North York library working on some editing of a few shots after making the drive from Hamilton. From there I met my friends Nancy and Tamara ( and their colleague Scott) who are in town for a work related conference. We had dinner and chilled for a bit. Nancy showed us her shots from her recent trip to Australia and now I want to go even more.

After that I arrived at Anthony and Katy’s place. They have moved since I was here in November and they opened up their new house to me. This is an awesome, quaint little house with so much character, it totally suits them.

I was originally waiting to hear back from a local TV station about a possible interview about my trip but it looks like they’ve passed. I was going to be on my way today but Anthony and Katie have convinced me to stay one more night and hang out. So me and Zoso (the cat) are going to do some more edits today and relax. Tomorrow I start the stretch across the rest of Ontario into the prairies.

For now, I’m simply in the moment, reflecting on the awesomeness of the people I know. I am a lucky guy. Thank you friends.

Day 97 – Wandering Aimlessly

I woke to snow, blowing in sideways in Port Hope. I didn’t want to deal with snow today. I drove down and into Hamilton as I was originally going to meet a friend here. I had time to kill before she was around so I wandered looking for shots as the sun was desperately trying to bust through the scattered cloud covering the area. I beat the snow though, leaving it behind in Port Hope… for awhile.

I wander aimlessly, killing time and not finding much to shoot. I did however find a library where I spent a little time doing a few edits, then they kicked me out as it was closing time. By this time I had heard that my friend is sick and suggested a different day if my schedule allowed. Fine with me as the last thing I need is to be sick on this trip. So I wandered some more. Then I saw a “Fifth Wheel” truck stop and decided to see what they’re room rates are as I was in desperate need of a shower. The rooms were too much for my budget but I was pleasantly surprised to find that they had “showers”. For $8.40 I was given two clean towels, a clean facecloth and a key to my own private bathroom. Sink, Toilet, Shower and electrical outlet for your shaver, Heaven!

Trust me, we all take certain thing for granted until we don’t have them. A hot shower has never felt so good as it today. Plus, the way I look at it, I saved over $60 as I got what I needed without forking over for a room. I can get workspace and internet at the library of for the price of a Starbucks (here now) and I can sleep where I usually do, cozy in my truck.

So after my shower I wandered some more, then found this Starbucks where I’ve been editing some more photos. I could wait until I got home but I find that seeing shots I’ve taken inspires me to go get more. Tomorrow is another day and since the snow has now caught up with me here in Stoney Creek, Ontario I’m sure it will be an interesting one.

Day 96 – Kingston to Port Hope

It rained hard all night and into the day in Kingston. The bright side is the rain has washed a lot of the muck and salt from the truck. because it looked so gloomy I was listless in getting moving this morning, taking my time, wandering. I didn’t see much for shots around Kingston in the rain, hit the 401 for a while then saw that the skies were opening up South of the freeway. I pulled off and got a few late afternoon shots along the number 2 highway.

It’s funny, some days I’ll have great weather and drive and drive and find nothing, then some will be grey and gloomy and there will be shots everywhere just no good light. Sometimes it’s a matter of an hour where my timing is simply late (or early). That’s the nature of this kind of photography I guess. I’m in the hands of mother nature, some days you’ll get the shots, some days you simply miss them.

Regardless, it was a good day, a nice drive once the rain subsided and now I’m in the Port Hope library doing a few edits and being connected with friends via Facebook. Sometimes one needs that.

Tomorrow I visit a friend in the Hamilton area and plans are in the works for a meeting with Kelly Noseworthy of the Weather Network for a little chat about my travels. That should happen this week and I’ll let you all know when that is set to air.

This is fun, everyone should try it.

Day 95 – Who? You That’s Who.

I woke up a little late, got a late start after finding the Cornwall Walmart and gather a few supplies. Cereal bars, cheap juice, etc. Stuff that I won’t spend ridiculous amounts in gas stations and that can also double as “breakfast”.

After that I found myself in a great mood. Very positive and feeling like no matter what happens this whole trip, the money concerns and life in general is going to work out wonderfully. I spent some time last night reading and learning about gear, techniques and looking at photos like the ones I hope to make money taking when I get home. That said, I’ll be available for portraits and creative photo projects once I’m home and ready to go. The positive side of needing certain gear is that I found out it really isn’t as expensive as I thought it was.

I drove the back roads most of the day today, finding some old farms, barns and the odd cool “tree” with a good layer of snow as a background all around. I found myself throwing caution to the wind and at many crossroads flipping a coin for the next direction. It was this that lead me to meeting my newest friend. I had just made a coin-flip turn and out of the corner of my eye saw something large and winged landing itself on the top of a fence post. Now I’m not a big brain when it comes to birds so I’m just gonna say it was a big beautiful light colored owl. Sitting there, hanging out.

I spun the truck around, pulled up on the opposite side of the road and quickly got my gear ready and slowly made my way across the road, taking shots every step. I got quite a few of him, sitting there, looking at the ground, looking at me. He seemed pretty casual, not threatened by me. We had a few moments then a car pulled up, slowed down, and proceeded to back up. Two guys get out, one armed with his point and shoot camera and proceeded to get closer and closer. As one decided he had to talk to me as his buddy approached the owl I was off my game. When my owl friend decided four is a crowd and flew away I missed capturing his departure as I hoped I would. None the less we shared a minute or two and that made my day.

So here I am in Kingston Ontario, home of the Tragically Hip. Sitting in the Second Cup having a coffee and using the wireless and more importantly enjoying the seat. Doing some edits to upload to this site and will hopefully have a shot of said owl friend up in a little bit.

Day 94 – Quebec City, Montreal and Out.

I like Quebec City, I like Montreal. Both great cities and I wandered through each of them today. As far as photography goes they have a lot to offer. Today, I was simply uninspired. The weather was beautiful but I just wasn’t feeling what I need to hunt down the shots I would have liked to see. There was a fair amount of snow in both cities and a lot of mucky muck on the streets. Add to that “traffic” and I was just wanting to get to some open road and find something “quiet”.

For the record, next to Richmond BC, Quebec has the worst drivers in the country. I won’t even get into it as my blood pressure can’t handle reliving the day.

I’m now in Ontario, Cornwall to be exact. I came down from route 40 through the farm country as the sun was setting and got some nice shots along the rural roads. Not a whole lot of shots but some good ones.

Was hoping to see a Walmart here as I actually need to get some cheap supplies but haven’t seen one yet. Tonight I listen to the Canucks game and relax. I tried the library here to see if they were open and maybe get some editing done but it’s closed. Oh well.
